What Is BOTOX?
Since it first gained FDA approval for cosmetic uses 25 years ago, BOTOX has become the most popular cosmetic treatment in the world. During that time, it has been safely used to temporarily relax the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles. By minimizing muscle contractions, BOTOX softens the appearance of lines without changing the way you naturally express yourself. The result is a refreshed, more youthful appearance that still looks like you.
Some of the most common areas treated with BOTOX include:
- Vertical frown lines between the brows (“11s”)
- Horizontal forehead furrows
- Crow’s feet around the eyes
- Bunny lines on the nose
- Fine lines around the lips
- Chin dimpling
Dr. Lopes participated as a clinical investigator in the original FDA studies of BOTOX Cosmetic. Her experience ensures every treatment is both safe and tailored to your goals.

What Happens During a BOTOX Treatment?
Your BOTOX appointment begins with a personalized consultation. Dr. Lopes or one of our expert injectors will review your concerns, discuss your desired outcome, and create a custom injection plan. The treatment typically lasts about 15 minutes and involves a series of small injections administered with a fine needle.
Most patients describe the sensation as a brief pinch. We can apply a topical numbing cream or ice if needed. There’s no downtime, and many people return to work or social activities immediately afterward. Minor redness or swelling may occur but typically resolve within a few hours.
Results typically appear within 7 to 10 days, with full effects visible in approximately 2 weeks. Results last about 3 to 4 months. With regular maintenance treatments, many patients notice their lines appear softer over time.

BOTOX vs. Dysport®: What’s the Difference?
Both BOTOX and Dysport are FDA-approved neuromodulators derived from botulinum toxin type A and work in similar ways.
- BOTOX is the original and most recognized brand. Many patients trust its long track record and appreciate its precise, targeted effects.
- Dysport has a slightly different formulation that allows it to diffuse more broadly once injected. Some patients find this beneficial for treating larger areas, such as the forehead. Dysport can sometimes show results a little faster, often within 2 to 3 days.
In the hands of an experienced injector, both products deliver excellent results. During your consultation, either Dr. Lopes or another member of her team will recommend the option that best matches your anatomy, treatment area, and personal goals.

Dynamic vs. Static Wrinkles
Not all wrinkles are the same. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by repeated facial expressions, such as smiling, frowning, or squinting, and they typically appear around the forehead, brows, and eyes. These are the lines that BOTOX and Dysport are especially effective at treating because they work by relaxing the muscles that create those movements.
Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are the lines and folds that form as skin loses collagen, elastin, and volume over time. Nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and hollowed cheeks are common examples of these signs of aging.
To address both types of wrinkles, many patients consider a liquid facelift. This approach combines neuromodulators like BOTOX or Dysport with dermal fillers. Together, these treatments can smooth expression lines, restore youthful contours, and create balanced, natural-looking rejuvenation.
