Dr. JoAnne Lopes has built a distinguished career grounded in surgical expertise, aesthetic vision, and a compassionate patient-first philosophy. She was the first female plastic surgeon in Virginia Beach to perform BOTOX® and contributed to clinical studies that led to its FDA approval. Professional Journey & Experience
Dr. Lopes began her professional path as a registered nurse in oncology, ICU, and public health, bringing a patient-centered lens even before specializing in surgery. She earned her MD in 1989 and completed rigorous surgical training, including a general surgery residency and subsequent fellowships in plastic and cosmetic surgery. Over the years, she has integrated both surgical and nonsurgical aesthetic techniques, pioneering BOTOX in the local market and serving as a clinical investigator in foundational FDA studies.
Her dual strengths, clinical skill and aesthetic insight, are backed by more than 25 years of experience, multiple academic appointments (including assistant professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School), publications, and presentations in the aesthetic surgery field.

Beyond her surgical practice, Dr. Lopes is deeply committed to giving back through volunteer work and patient support efforts. She has served as a physician at YMCA Silver Beach Camp and supported local organizations, including VB Tails.
One notable and meaningful contribution is her involvement with Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD) Buddy Brigade. This pet therapy program brings comfort and emotional support to hospitalized children. The Buddy Brigade comprises certified therapy dogs and handlers who visit pediatric patients to reduce anxiety, brighten their moods, and humanize the hospital environment. Dr. Lopes supports and advocates for the program, recognizing the profound impact that kindness and healing connections can have during vulnerable times.
